Stables Cottage is an attractive traditional comfortable cottage which forms part of a mid-Victorian cobbled courtyard.
Built as the groomsmans accommodation in the mid nineteenth century, the property has been completely renovated and is now a well equipped, cosy property with easy access to 8 acres of garden and parkland. Surrounded by rural landscapes the cottage sits within five minutes walk of the Rivers Tweed and Leader, the former being famed worldwide for salmon fishing.
Melrose has a superb selection of small shops and still boasts two butchers, two bakers, greengrocer, fishmonger, chemist and a wonderful selection of "eateries" including award winning restaurants.
Downstairs, Stables Cottage at Kirklands has a comfortable sitting room complete with log burning stove (logs provided), fully equipped kitchen, small utility room with freezer facility for our fishing guests and bathroom complete with bath/shower. Bedrooms comprise of spacious double and twin rooms (the twin can also accommodate an extra occassional single bed) and a small childs room (up to age 7 approx).
Outside the cottage in the cobbled courtyard, seating and tables are available to allow relaxation with a glass of wine or a cup of tea in what is a natural sun trap at certain times of the day. In addition BBQ equipment is available on request.
The Abbey town of Melrose sits in the heart of the Scottish Borders and is an ideal base for exploring the many gems it has to offer whatever your interests be or even if you just intend having a relaxing lazy break. The town centre can be reached by car in around five minutes or by foot which takes approximately forty minutes and is about three miles, mainly on pedestrian routes. If cycling is planned, Stables Cottage has ample bicycle storage and guests are welcome to use the adjacent washing facilities (for their bikes!).
Other activities available locally include horse riding, tennis (floodlit courts), golf (over twenty courses within half an hours radius), fishing for trout and salmon (two trout fishing permits available for guests use during appropriate season free of charge) and walking (The St Cuthberts Way starts at Melrose and The Southern Upland Way skirts the town). Walkers can also enjoy the many shorter walks in and around Melrose including The Eildon Hills, the views from which are spectacular.
The East coast is less than an hours drive from Melrose and Edinburgh with its attractions is within easy reach.
All in all The Stables Cottage at Kirklands provides an ideal location for either a relaxing break or something more energetic.
